What Is 4 Line Urdu Poetry?

In Urdu poetry, one line is called a misra, and two misre together make one sher (couplet). So 4 line poetry is simply two sher, or four misre, read together as one thought.

There are three common forms of 4 line poetry in Urdu:

  • Two sher from one ghazal: two couplets from the same ghazal that share the same radeef (the repeated ending word) and qafia (the rhyme).
  • Qita: four or more lines that complete one idea together. Each line depends on the others.
  • Rubai: a special four-line form with its own fixed meter (behr), loved by poets like Mir Anees.

All the 4 line shayari in this collection are two sher from the same ghazal, so they flow together with one rhythm and one feeling. Each poet is a master of the classical age, and their poetry has been read and loved for more than a hundred years.

4 Line Sad Poetry in Urdu

Sad poetry in Urdu speaks of dard (pain), intezar (waiting), judai (separation) and the sleepless nights of a broken heart. These six 4 line sad shayari capture those feelings better than any long paragraph.

1. Mirza Ghalib: Ye Na Thi Hamari Qismat

Ye na thi hamari qismat ke visal-e-yaar hota
Agar aur jeete rehte yahi intezar hota
Tere wade par jiye hum to ye jaan jhoot jaana

— Mirza Ghalib

Explanation: Ghalib says that meeting the beloved was never in his fate; even a longer life would only have meant a longer wait. In the second sher he says: do not think I lived because I trusted your promise, because if I had truly believed it, I would have died of joy.

4 line sad poetry by Mirza Ghalib in Urdu text

2. Mirza Ghalib: Koi Umeed Bar Nahi Aati

Koi umeed bar nahi aati
Koi soorat nazar nahi aati
Maut ka ek din muayyan hai
Neend kyun raat bhar nahi aati

— Mirza Ghalib

Explanation: No hope is being fulfilled and no way out can be seen. Ghalib then asks a famous question: if the day of death is already fixed, why does worry keep me awake all night?

3. Mirza Ghalib: Dil Hi To Hai

Royenge hum hazaar baar koi hamein sataye kyun
Dair nahi haram nahi dar nahi aastan nahi
Baithe hain reh-guzar pe hum ghair hamein uthaye kyun

— Mirza Ghalib

Explanation: It is a heart, not stone or brick, so why would it not fill with pain? We will cry a thousand times, but no one has the right to hurt us. In the second sher Ghalib says he is not sitting at anyone’s door or temple, only on a public road, so why should anyone push him away?

4. Mir Taqi Mir: Ulti Ho Gayin Sab Tadbeerein

Dekha is beemari-e-dil ne aakhir kaam tamaam kiya
Ahd-e-jawani ro ro kaata peeri mein leen aankhein moond
Yaani raat bahut the jaage subah hui aaraam kiya

— Mir Taqi Mir

Explanation: Every plan failed and no medicine worked; in the end, the illness of the heart (love) finished him. Mir spent his youth in tears and closed his eyes in old age, just like someone who stays awake all night and finally rests when morning comes.

5. Mir Taqi Mir: Dekh To Dil Ke Jaan Se Uthta Hai

Dekh to dil ke jaan se uthta hai
Ye dhuan sa kahan se uthta hai
Yun uthe aah us gali se hum
Jaise koi jahan se uthta hai

— Mir Taqi Mir

Explanation: Mir asks where this smoke is rising from: is it the heart or the soul? Then he says that leaving the beloved’s street felt like leaving the world itself, as if it were a kind of death.

6. Ibrahim Zauq: Ab To Ghabra Ke Ye Kehte Hain

Ab to ghabra ke ye kehte hain ke mar jayenge
Mar ke bhi chain na paaya to kidhar jayenge
Khaali aye chaara-garo honge bahut marham-daan
Par mere zakhm nahi aise ke bhar jayenge

— Ibrahim Zauq

Explanation: In panic we say we will die, but if there is no peace even after death, where will we go? Zauq tells the healers that their boxes of ointment will empty, but his wounds are not the kind that heal.

7. Momin Khan Momin: Tumhein Yaad Ho Ke Na Yaad Ho

Woh naye gile woh shikayatein woh maze maze ki hikayatein
Woh har ek baat pe roothna tumhein yaad ho ke na yaad ho

— Momin Khan Momin

Explanation: Momin reminds the beloved of the promise they once made to stay together. He remembers the little complaints, the sweet stories and the way the beloved got upset over every small thing, and gently asks: do you still remember, or have you forgotten?

4 line love poetry by Momin Khan Momin

8. Dagh Dehlvi: Ye Kaam Kis Ka Tha

Tumhare khat mein naya ek salaam kis ka tha
Na tha raqeeb to aakhir woh naam kis ka tha
Woh qatl kar ke mujhe har kisi se poochte hain
Ye kaam kis ne kiya hai ye kaam kis ka tha

— Dagh Dehlvi

Explanation: Dagh playfully asks whose new greeting appeared in the beloved’s letter, and if it was not a rival, whose name was it? In the second sher he smiles at the beloved’s innocence: after breaking his heart, they ask everyone who could have done it.

9. Allama Iqbal: Na Aate Hamein Is Mein Takraar Kya Thi

Na aate hamein is mein takraar kya thi
Magar wada karte hue aar kya thi
Tumhare payami ne sab raaz khola
Khata is mein bande ki sarkaar kya thi

— Allama Iqbal (Bang-e-Dra)

Explanation: Iqbal says he would not have argued if the beloved did not come, but why were they ashamed to even promise? When the messenger revealed every secret, he asks what fault was his in that. This ghazal is from Bang-e-Dra, Iqbal’s first Urdu collection.

10. Mir Taqi Mir: Patta Patta Boota Boota

Patta patta boota boota haal hamara jaane hai
Jee ke ziyan ko ishq mein us ke apna waara jaane hai

— Mir Taqi Mir

Explanation: Every leaf and every plant in the garden knows the lover’s condition; only the flower (the beloved) does not. Mir adds that no one in the world is as simple as a lover, who sees losing his life in love as a profit.

11. Mirza Ghalib: Dil-e-Nadan Tujhe Hua Kya Hai

Dil-e-nadan tujhe hua kya hai
Aakhir is dard ki dawa kya hai
Hum hain mushtaq aur woh bezaar
Ya Ilahi ye maajra kya hai

— Mirza Ghalib

Explanation: Ghalib asks his innocent heart what has happened to it and what the cure for this pain is. He is full of longing while the beloved is tired of him, and he asks God what kind of story this is.

4 Line Poetry on Life and Wishes

Some 4 line poetry goes beyond love and speaks about zindagi (life) itself: unfinished wishes, short time and the storms we live through.

12. Mirza Ghalib: Hazaron Khwahishen Aisi

Hazaron khwahishen aisi ke har khwahish pe dam nikle
Bahut nikle mere armaan lekin phir bhi kam nikle
Nikalna khuld se Adam ka sunte aaye hain lekin
Bahut be-aabroo ho kar tere kooche se hum nikle

— Mirza Ghalib

Explanation: Ghalib had thousands of wishes, each one worth dying for; many came true, yet it still felt like too few. In the second sher he says we have heard of Adam being sent out of paradise, but he left the beloved’s street in even greater disgrace.

13. Khwaja Mir Dard: Tohmatein Chand Apne Zimme Dhar Chale

Tohmatein chand apne zimme dhar chale
Jis liye aaye the so hum kar chale
Zindagi hai ya koi toofan hai
Hum to is jeene ke haathon mar chale

— Khwaja Mir Dard

Explanation: Mir Dard says he takes a few blames on himself and leaves, having done what he came into the world to do. Then he asks whether this is life or a storm, because living itself has worn him out.
